Here’s to the First Responders!
Just interrupting my self-imposed break from blogging to give a quick shout-out to the first responders and healthcare personnel everywhere…

For the long shift full of sick people when you should be home wrapping presents…
For the hastily grabbed “lunch” of Christmas cookies and fudge from the anesthesia team when you need protein to finish this day…
For the cheesy hospital Santa picture with your kids because that is all you had time for this year…
For the hospital coffee on cold mornings after an early morning emergency run…
For the crappy schedule this year – working Christmas Eve AND New Year’s Eve – what the what?!
For the long argument with the doctor who doesn’t want to interrupt their holiday for the going-down-the-drain patient and come in…
For the icy morning when you are stuck attending every accident when you’d rather be home…
For the calls from cranky shoppers who think it’s YOUR job to police their issues with a store (huh?!)…
For the time you have to tell the new widow that her spouse of fifty two years has died on Christmas Day…
For the Christmas Eve when you feel like screaming “there’s no more room at the inn!” to all of the pregnant women coming through the door…

What you do matters. No one gives you enough kudos (or enough money!) for all that you do, but it’s important. So high five your fellow nurses, police, firefighters, and paramedics and do what you do so well. Then take a long break in March! Merry Christmas!
